This red, blue, green, orange, purple and golden yellow fire laced display piece comes from the good old days of mining in NSW Australia when the boulder opal's ironstone would be so dense and iron rich that it presented almost like hematite in its metallic luster and had that super nice black border right behind the opal.  This piece in that since is no exception.  One could, if they wanted, slice this up for cutting into cabs or one large cab and price it at an easy to 0 per carat (so, well over a ,000 to a ,000 after you subtract the cost of the piece, profit (so a 12 to 24 x markup in a world where its hard to make a 2 x markup) for the enterprising cutter/jeweler for ...unless, as we suspect but don't have the guts to test the theory and destroy a cool specimen, all of those veins of fire gather up into a nodule of high grade crystal opal about half way back...then you can be talking about a museum piece that can pay off a mortgage and a car, however, that is for you to decide.  Instead, we are offering it as it is at .75 a carat, which is less than you would pay for a high grade rubbed boulder opal rough of this quality directly from Oz...( to per ct for high yield, rubbed rough...not mine run or non-rubbed and most of that these days is the lesser value tan matrix, not the rich deep, heavy chocolately brown iron stone).
If you decide to buy it for cutting rough, we suggest slowly slicing it from the back side an 1/8th of an inch at a time just encase its a nut...and if it is...we would love to see what you do with it!
